Yellow Fever Vaccine at Nairobi Airport (JKIA): Price, Hours, How It Works

Yes - you can get a yellow fever vaccination at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA). The Port Health vaccination centre sits inside the airport, operates 24 hours, and charges a reported KSh 3,500 (about USD 27) per dose. No appointment needed - walk in with your passport.

It exists mainly for two kinds of travelers: people arriving from a yellow fever country without a certificate (Kenya requires it and would otherwise turn you back), and residents who left it too late before a trip.

The catch you must know before relying on it: a first certificate only becomes valid 10 days after the injection. If you are flying home to a country that checks certificates - India, Australia, much of the Caribbean - a jab at JKIA does not protect the return leg of a trip shorter than 10 days.

• Arriving in Kenya from a risk country, no certificate: the airport jab solves it. You are vaccinated on the spot and allowed in.

• Flying home to India: Airport Health Officers check certificates on Kenya arrivals and can hold unvaccinated - or invalid-certificate - travelers in isolation up to 6 days. If your safari is shorter than 10 days after the jab, the JKIA shot does not save you. Get vaccinated in India before departure (government centres charge roughly INR 300-600).

• Flying home to the UK, EU, USA: no certificate is checked on arrival - the 10-day rule is irrelevant to your return.

• Onward to Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda: you arrive 'from Kenya', a risk country - the certificate is checked, same 10-day validity applies.

Rule of thumb: the airport vaccination is a rescue for ARRIVAL problems, not a plan for DEPARTURE problems.

No - treat it as a fallback. Book a vaccination at an approved centre in your home country at least two weeks before departure. Reasons:
