Do I Need a Yellow Fever Vaccine for Kenya? Entry Rules by Country (2026)

You need the yellow fever vaccine if any part of your route touches a yellow fever country - and that includes coming home. Kenya itself sits on the risk list, so even a simple round trip can pull you into the rules.

Use these three questions. One yes anywhere = get the shot.

Are you flying to Kenya FROM a yellow fever country? (most of Africa, parts of Latin America - list below). Then Kenya checks your certificate on arrival.

Is your home country one that asks after a Kenya trip? India, Australia, and much of the Caribbean and Latin America do - they check your certificate when you land back home, within 6 days of leaving Kenya. India is the strictest: without the certificate you can be held in isolation for up to six days at your own cost.

Does your safari continue beyond Kenya? Tanzania, Zanzibar, Uganda, Rwanda, Ethiopia - every one of them will ask when you cross from Kenya.

Answered no to all three? A round trip like London-Nairobi or New York-Nairobi, direct flights, home again - the certificate rules never apply to you. Kenya will not ask on arrival, and the UK, USA, Germany and the rest of Europe will not ask when you land back. The vaccine becomes a personal choice to discuss with a travel clinic, not a border requirement.

One injection covers you for life. It takes effect 10 days after you get it - so plan it at least two weeks before departure.

Kenya's arrival check depends on ONE thing: where your flight departs from. Not your nationality, not your passport (Kenya Ministry of Health, Arriving Travellers).

Kenya is a yellow fever country, so when you fly home, your own country may ask for your certificate - even though it never asked on your way out. The rule most countries use: a certificate is required if you arrive within 6 days of leaving a risk country. Every direct flight from Nairobi lands inside that window.

Kenya's official Port Health Division confirms it: JKIA operates a vaccination centre inside the airport, open 24 hours, offering yellow fever plus typhoid, tetanus, hepatitis A/B, polio and meningitis - see the Port Health Division's official list of port-of-entry vaccination centres. The reported price is about KSh 3,500 (roughly USD 27) per dose.

The catch is the 10-day rule - and it is a legal rule, not a medical guideline. Under the WHO International Health Regulations (Annex 7, certificate validity), a first yellow fever certificate only becomes valid on the tenth day after vaccination. Day nine does not count.

So: arriving in Kenya without the certificate (flying in from a risk country)? The airport jab solves today's problem. Flying home to a country that asks - India, Australia, the Caribbean? The airport jab does NOT solve that unless your safari runs 10+ days after the injection. Land in Mumbai nine days after a Nairobi vaccination and your certificate is still legally invalid.

Kenya's rule extends to long transits. If you change planes in a risk country and your layover is more than 12 hours, you officially arrive 'from' that country - certificate required.

What this means on real routes:

• London to Nairobi via Addis Ababa, 3-hour layover: No certificate needed

• London to Nairobi via Addis Ababa, 14-hour layover: Certificate needed

• Mumbai to Nairobi via Doha or Dubai, any layover: Never needed - the Gulf hubs are not risk countries

• Anywhere to Nairobi via Istanbul or Amsterdam: Never triggered

Honest answer: it depends on your route.

Effectively mandatory - if your home country asks after Kenya (India, Australia, much of the Caribbean and Latin America), or if your safari continues to Tanzania, Uganda, Rwanda, Zanzibar or Ethiopia. Get it before you travel; a Kenya-side jab in Nairobi costs more and the 10-day validity window can complicate the trip home.

Genuinely optional - round-trip London-Nairobi or New York-Nairobi, direct flights, no onward African travel. The certificate rules will never force it. Some travelers get it anyway for peace of mind, and some doctors recommend it for Kenya beyond the coast and the Mara - but that is advice territory, not border-control territory. What the shot involves: one injection, at an approved vaccination centre, valid for life after 10 days. In India it costs INR 300-600 at government centres; in the UK around GBP 60-80 privately; in the US USD 150-250.

Is yellow fever mandatory for Kenya? Only if you are arriving from a country where yellow fever exists - most of Africa and parts of Latin America. It is not mandatory for travelers flying in directly from the UK, Europe, the USA, India, the Gulf or Asia. No country-specific exemptions exist: the rule is purely about your departure point.

Is yellow fever required for Kenya from the USA? No. Direct flights from New York or any US city arrive with no certificate check. The same applies to the UK, Germany, France, and the rest of Europe.

Is yellow fever required for Kenya from UAE or Qatar? No - Dubai, Abu Dhabi and Doha are not yellow fever countries, so connecting through them never triggers the check.

Is yellow fever required for Kenya from South Africa? No - South Africa has no yellow fever, so direct Johannesburg-Nairobi flights arrive unchecked.

Is yellow fever required for Kenya from India? No on entry - but YES on your return: India checks certificates on arrivals within 6 days of leaving Kenya, so India-based travelers should get vaccinated before departure.

Is the yellow fever vaccine recommended for Kenya even when not required? Many travel clinics recommend it as general protection, since Kenya does have yellow fever in parts of the country (the coast mainly; the Maasai Mara sits high and dry at 1,600m where risk is very low). That is a conversation for your travel doctor - the border rules themselves will not force you.
